Welcome to the Cyber Home of the Iron Witch

My name is Gillian Cheyse.  I am a native Appalachian, a tree hugger with a day job, poet, hiker, horse enthusiast, recycler, animal welfare educator, and committed to living bravely by simply being myself, believing in myself and living what I know to be right for myself.  I see things a little differently than most people and this is the place I don't have to apologize for it.  So, welcome.  Look around, hang around and make yourself at home.  Check out the main Blog, Living Well Blog, Green Page, Iron Powaqa Radio pages and links, follow a kitchen witch in training and join a forum thread or two.  I'll be back in just a bit and we'll get a little wicked together...

Home is About to Get Messy

Painting is the word of the season.  We are doing several home projects this spring and summer that involve me painting.  Because Sam....HATES to paint.  I actually enjoy it so I am the one who gets to get dirty with a brush and roller whenever the time comes.

Then there is the really fun stuff!  Today I got a bunch of acrylic paints in bright colors and I am going to have a blast painting some glass jars, flower pots, making some home-made signs and whatever else strikes my fancy as the weather clears and I head outside.

I'll post some pictures of my success AND my failure just for good measure.  This is my first little jar to the left!  I did some more the other night as well and will post those later.

And Speaking of Messy...

I have a sewing machine.  It is a nice machine so I have been told.  My mom gave it to me when she got a nicer sewing machine.  Er, spare no expense that's mom's motto LOL.  This was around 11 years ago.  Since that time it has - been shuffled around in my car with me for awhile, at which point someone saw it and informed me that it was "a really nice sewing machine" and then it finally made it into the house and started its career of being stored in our closet.

I am happy to report that I purchased a table for said sewing machine today.  Now, don't get excited the picture to the left is NOT of my sewing space.  I wish I were that crafty.  Maybe some day.  But the first step was to actually MAKE a space in which I could sew and buy getting a table that I can get out when needed and easily store when I don't I have taken that step.

I'm not new to sewing.  I actually used to sew ALL the time in high school.  I'm not sure why I stopped but I would say like anything else it was because life got too hectic, I didn't have access to a machine anymore and/or I just lost interest.  But, my interest has been renewed so we'll see what comes of it!

Paying Stuff Forward

Since spring is a common time to clean our surroundings and tidy up our minds, why not take a day or a weekend to get started on cleaning your spiritual and practical house?

Recently I did both and feel pretty darn great about it.

Interestingly enough, once my practical "stuff" was packed up and ready to go to the local thrift shop I happened to run into a girlfriend who had just started a new job and was talking about how she needed to find some appropriate clothes.  It just so happened that I had some clothes that fit the bill!  So, I got to clean out some things that, although I was no longer wearing them, were still in good shape and ready to be passed on.  Better yet lots of those things ended up going to help out someone I know and care about.

Cleaning out your spiritual or mental house might not be something you can so readily share, but the benefits of it will be noticed by the people you love in many ways.  If you can cut down on the stress in your own life, you can be more happy and at ease with others.  It all goes back to that old belief that taking care of yourself first makes you able to be there for others.

Think about all this for the coming season...
